how the mexican-american helped the Westward expansion
The US and Mexico had many issues referring to land including Governmental differences, slavery, racism, and different religious beliefs. This caused what is called the Texas Revolution, which ended up in US taking the land of Texas. The US gained much more land in effect gaining population of many people from the east moving in to the west. The Texas Revolution was a turning point in both America and Mexico because it created new land for the US gaining population for settlers to settle from the east and for Mexico who had many problems after that referring to money and land as the US celebrated their new land. Anglos from Texas didn’t like the idea of this because it affected their laws and land of course. Also many people didn’t want to move to Texas while they still had the land because they didn’t support Slavery, so after the war was won by the US many settlers from the south moved to the US allowing them to bring their slaves and saw it as a new opportunity to start again.
Because of the treaty of “Guadalupe Hidalgo” signed in February of 1848 which was Mexico had to give up California, Utah, Nevada and other parts of land, many people moved in towards to those land which helped the Westward Expansion. (2) Mexicans in those annexed areas had the choice of relocating to Mexico or receiving American Citizenship with full civil rights. 90% remained. After America acquired their new land of many states, Mexicans had the choice to either stay or leave, 90% decided to stay, which increased the population of the west, which helped the Westward Expansion.
Giving the newly land, the west could expand by having the population increase dramatically from people of the south and Mexico. Mexicans had the option to leave or have full Citizenship by staying. This was a turning point because it created compromise between Mexico and America; this revolution was almost as big as the American War because the masses of Land gained is what is present-day United States. In Mexico’s eyes, they saw defeat and didn’t celebrate like the US did. This created conflict between the US and Mexico, many people felt excited because they felt it was an opportunity for a new life to live in America and others wanted no part of American and buried themselves in their own sorrow.
After America won the Mexican-American war, many pioneers who lived in the Appalachian west left their home in search of economic opportunity. They associated Westward migration in search of land ownership and farming with freedom. This increased the population of the west helping the Westward expansion. The Thornton Affair was a battle in 1846 between the military forces of the US and Mexico 20 miles along Rio Grande, since the US defeated the Mexican soldiers it gave US the confidence to move west even more.
American soldiers knew that if they won this battle against Mexico that this would expand their mission on moving west even more.
The Mexican-American war has taught us that if it weren’t for America to gain/win the land against Mexico the US wouldn’t be what it is today including California, Arizona, Colorado, and other parts of what now is the US. In every conflict there are winners and losers, those who loose must adjust to what has changed or those who win gain something that will later benefit them in life.
